In 1878, Manchester United were originally Newton Heath LYR Football Club, a team for the Lancashire and Yorkshire Railway Company, who joined the Football League in 1892.
Manchester City started life under the name St. Mark’s (West Gorton) in 1880, established by the Church in a district of Manchester. They underwent a name change in 1887, becoming Ardwick Association Football Club, and it was not until 1894 that the name Manchester City Football Club was born.
The first recorded Manchester Derby took place on November 12, 1881, under their early names, with St. Mark’s (West Gorton) playing against Newton Heath. Newton Heath won 3-0, a match symbolic of the growing football culture in Manchester. As both teams grew, their meetings became more frequent and their rivalry intensified, especially after both clubs found their permanent names and homes.
The Early Life of Old Trafford
By the early 20th century, the matches between the two had become major events for the local communities.

In a season when Blackburn Rovers won the title against the odds, Andrei Kanchelskis stole the headlines during the Manchester Derby at Old Trafford. He grabbed a hat-trick on the day, asserting United’s dominance over their city rivals, even if they fell agonisingly short on maintaining their grip on the League Title, succumbing to Blackburn by a single point.
2) April 23, 2003: Manchester United 1-0 Manchester City
In this tightly contested fixture, a solitary goal from United great Ruud van Nistellroy was enough to take home all three points for Manchester United. Such a close game is synonymous with the close, hardly-fought battles these two teams engaged in over the years.
3) February 10, 2008: Manchester United 1-2 Manchester City
If ever there was a game that was about more than just football, then this was it. It served as a tribute to the 50th anniversary of the tragic Munich air disaster, while City persevered on the day thanks to goals from Benjani and Darrius Vassell, it was a game remembered for the respect both sides shared.
4) September 20, 2009: Manchester United 4-3 Manchester City
Perhaps one of the most dramatic of United’s victories over their arch-rivals. A back-and-forth game seemed to be headed for an entertaining stalemate, only for Micheal Owen to score a dramatic winner in the dying seconds of the game. A perfect example of ‘Fergie Time’! Many fans still talk about this game today!
5) October 23, 2011: Manchester United 1-6 Manchester City
If there was a game that signalled a shift in power within the city, a game where City began to live up to their ‘Noisy Neighbour’ tag, then this was it. City’s emphatic win was a statement of their rising dominance, highlighted by Mario Balotelli’s iconic “Why Always Me?” celebration.
6) April 12, 2015: Manchester United 4-2 Manchester City
A commanding performance from United reasserted their status as a powerhouse within the intense Manchester rivalry. Goals from Ashley Young, Marouane Fellaini, Juan Mata, and Chris Smalling, made a clear statement against their city rivals.
7) September 10, 2016: Manchester United 1-2 Manchester City
In what proved to be the signal to the start of City’s dominance under Pep, City ran out as comfortable winners in the end, despite Zlatan Ibrahimovic’s reply just before halftime. This was Pep’s first taste (of many) Manchester Derby successes.
