The long-standing rivalry and unique relationship between Everton FC and Manchester United
This significant North-West rivalry dates back to the 1960s and arguably stemmed from the 1985 FA Cup final in which a ten-man Manchester United side stopped the newly crowned League and European Cup champions, Everton, from claiming this title as well, beating the team 1-0.
Since then, games have been fiercely fought and big names from the likes of Wayne Rooney to Mikel Arteta have made stepped up when facing off against their Northern competitors. In total though, it is Manchester United lead the head-to-head record with 94 wins to Everton’s 71 and matches resulting in a draw on 47 occasions.
Whilst there is intense competition on the pitch to see who can take points on matchdays, the two clubs have a unique relationship thanks to their shared hatred of the same team; Liverpool FC. As the saying goes, ‘the enemy of my enemy is my friend’, and that is certainly the case for a lot of Everton and Manchester United fans.
The home of Everton FC, Goodison Park
Everton played their first few games at their competitors Anfield stadium, but after rent disputes the blue side of the Mersey ventured to find a new home. The landed on the other side of Stanley Park, less than a mile from their old home and named their site after the road that ran alongside it.
Goodison Park became the new home Everton and embarked on an ambitious project that eventually saw England’s first ever modern stadium, purpose-built for football. After further developments to the ground in 1938 it also became the first stadium with four sides of two-tier stands to home their growing and dedicated fanbase.
This historic ground has also made a name for itself in the record books for hosting more top-flight football games than any other stadium in England. Notable top matches hosted there include the 1894 FA Cup Final and the 1910 FA Cup final replay and the World Cup semi-final in 1966.
Despite such history, the iconic stadium only has one more year of glory before the blue side of Liverpool move to their new home, the Everton Stadium at Bramley-Moore Dock.
Everton FC vs. Manchester United – stand-out matches
1. The first victory against Manchester United at Goodison Park in the Premier League
It took Everton 3 years to claim victory at home in the Premier League against their North-West rivals. When United visited on the 25th February 1995 Everton upped their game, they knew they had to come away with a win and thanks to a goal from Duncan Ferguson they saw the game out and took the victory.
2. A dramatic afternoon at Goodison Park
The September 2010 match-up between the two ‘friends’ looked like it was going in the way of Manchester United; they were up 3-1 and seemingly on their way to winning by the 66th minute. Yet two goals were round the corner, a header from Tim Cahill and a late goal from Mikel Arteta saw the Toffees claw back a point.
3. A dominant Everton display
After years of Manchester United dominating English football, April 2019 saw the tables turn as Everton FC came away with all three points and a 4-0 victory at their home of Goodison Park. Goals from Richarlison, Gylfi Sigurdsson, Lucas Digne and Theo Walcott sealed the deal.
4. The start of a glistening career for Anthony Gordon
9th April 2022 was the last time Everton beat Manchester United at home and it was thanks to a first-half goal from new midfielder on the block, Anthony Gordon. Gordon scored in the 27th minute to a roar from the crowd at Goodison Park; a much needed win having only won two of the last 16 meetings between the two sides.
